About Fanshawe Pioneer Village :

Fanshawe Pioneer Village is an early example of the museum type known as a “Pioneer Village,” initially developed in mid 20th century Ontario by Conservation Authorities. This type of museum was created as a natural extension of the core mandate of Conservation Authorities to provide an alternate use for heritage structures relocated during the creation of water reservoirs. Founded by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority in 1956 and opened in 1959, Fanshawe Pioneer Village was developed in partnership with the University of Western Ontario and continues to exhibit the values and original mandate of its founder, Wilfred Jury. From 2.2 acres on a peninsula of land in Fanshawe Conservation Area, Fanshawe Pioneer Village has grown to over 30 original and replica buildings on 46 acres.
Fanshawe Pioneer Village tells the story of rural communities in the former townships of Westminster, London, North Dorchester, Delaware, West Nissouri and Lobo in Middlesex County from 1820 to 1920 and the founding and development of the City of London up to 1840. This chronological framework starts at the time of initial settlement within the Upper Thames River watershed, follows the development of farms and then crossroads, villages and towns, and ends during a period of migration to cities that brought dramatic change to rural communities.
Fanshawe Pioneer Village is owned and operated by the not-for-profit charity known as the London and Middlesex Heritage Museum with the support of the City of London, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, the Municipality of Thames Centre and the Municipality of Middlesex Centre.
