Education Program Timetable:

Spring Program from May 4 - June 24, 2010
Fall Program from September 1 - November 12, 2010
Christmas Program from November 24 - December 17, 2010
The cost per program is $5.50 per student/visitor (Full day programs are $11 per student)
Core and Seasonal programs are 90 minutes in length, with 10:00 am and 12:30 pm start times.

Education Programs:

FPV Guided Tour
Journey back in time to see the development of Canadian society as represented by more than 30 historic buildings at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. A costumend interpreter will lead you through the Village, giving participants a chance to explore and ask questions about the site.  Special activities available upon request include a 19th century school house lesson or 19th century games.

Recommended for Grade 7 to Adult

FPV Interactive Guided Tour
Journey back in time accompanied by a pioneer guide to learn about 19th century life and to visit our more than 20 historic buildings at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. Students will have the opportunity to explore, ask questions and participate in 2 hands-on 19th century activities. Choolse from spinning & carding wool, churning butter, 19th century dancing or printing a hand bill in the Print Shop.

Recommended for Grades 3 – 8 (Programs can be modified for your school group)

The Village at Work
This interactive program allows students to experience work expected of children inthe 19th century village.  In the spring, students will perform farm chores such as flailing wheat, feeding and caring for animals and cleaning sead for planting.  During this program, students will experience 19th century printing in our print shop and created their very own hand bill to take home.  This program provides children with the opportunity to experience the challenges of work in the 19th century and to understand the differences between tools and technology used for farming and trades.

Recommended for Grades 1 - 6 (Programs can be modified for your school group)

A Day in the Life
Children had a busy life in the 19th Century.  When not working in the fields, they attended school and contributed to household chores.  In the spring those chores included laundry, carding and spinning wool, gardening and other daily domestic chores.  After the household chores were completed, children attended a one room school house where all grades were taught by one teacher.
In this program, students assume the role of children in the 19th Century and participate in househould chores and a one room school lesson.

Recommended for Grades 1 - 6 (Programs can be modified for your school group) 

19th Century Everyday Structures and Shapes - May 4 - 28 & October 5 - November 13
This program will provide elementary students with a hands-on introduction to 19th century building and designing methods.  Students will participate inthe building of a stabel structure, create corner joints and assemble a frame structure.  Students will examine the patterns and colours used in 19th century quilts and create a quilt block.

Recommended for Grades 1 - 2

Upper Canada Christmas
Even when life was harsh, the weather was cold and material goods were scarce, pioneers set aside time to prepare for and celebrate the holidays. In this interactive program, participants will experience a pioneer family's first Christmas and discover the special fun, foods and traditions of Christmas in Upper Canada.

Make Fanshawe Pioneer Village your classroom! Book the award-winning Museum school program for an intensive, week-long experience. Fanshawe Pioneer Vilage will provide five, two-hour programs to complement a chosed curriculum topic or unit.  For the rest of the school day, teachers are welcome to use all the resouces of this outstanding living history site. The Thames Valley Regional Heritage Fair Program is a multi-media learning initiative developed to increase public awareness and interest in Canadian History.  The goal of the program is to offer students the opportunity to explore many aspects of Canadian history in a dynamic learning environment and to present the results of their efforts in a public exhibition. Muskets, Militia, and Mayhem: A War of 1812 Education Day (Full Day Program)
(Grades 6, 7 and 8)

This exciting full-day, multi-school event gives students a chance to explore the War of 1812 through a series of real-life scenarios and vignettes. Join a militia muster, watch a 19th centruy cannon crew fire the gun and debate views with villagers loyal to King George and those who support Republicanism.  Through active participation in more than a dozen stations, students will make a personal connection with the War of 1812 and leave with an understanding of how it affected local inhabitants' daily lives.

Presented in partnership with the Canadian Military Heritage Society

This exciting full-day, multi-school event gives students a chance to explore WWI through a series of real life scenarios and vignettes.  Join the Canadian Expeditionary Force and learn the art of trench raid, participate in marching drill, learn the role women played in WWI and join in on the battle of Vimy Ridge.  Through active participation, students will make a personal connection with WWI and leave them with an understanding of how the war affected people for a generation.  To book this new education program, call 519-457-1296.

London-Middlesex Children's Water Festival
(Grades 3 - 5)
May 18 - 21, 2010
The London-Middlesex Children's Water Festival is a hands-on learning environment for students in grades 3-5 to discover the importance of water in their lives and communities.  The Festival features over 45 hands-on activity stations linked to the Ontario Curriculum.  These stations teach students about respecting and conserving our valuable water resources, so they care to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for the future.  For further information please visit www.childrenswaterfestival.ca. New! Panther Across the Sky: The Story of Tecumseh
(Grades 6, 7, 8, 10, 12)
September 29, 30 and October 1, 2010
Cost: $10/student
As the bicentennial of the War of 1812 rapidly approaches, it is more important than ever that Canadians understand the life and legacy of the Shawnee warrior and leader Tecumseh.  This play tells the tale of two brothers, Tecumseh and "The Prophet" Tenskwatawa, and the contributions they made to a perilous period of history.

(Grade 4)

This new education program is designed to provide students with a hands-on historical experience specifically focusing on simple machines.  Learn about the forms of enery machines used in the past and compare past technologies with machinery today.

NEW! Daily LIfe in Early 20th Century
(Grade 10)
October 5 - November 12, 2010
This early 20th century education program is designed specifically for the Grade 10 curriculum.  The program will introduce students to the fashions/leisure pursuits of the time, technologies being developed and life in an early 20th century rural homestead.  Hands on activities and thoughtful discussion will engage students in the experience of Canadaina daily life leading up to the Great War.
