A blacksmith's apprentice or family member often spent their day pumping the bellows in order to increase air flow into the forge, thus making the fire burn hotter. Here split cedar rails have been used to build a popular Ontario style fence known as a snake rail fence. The name comes from its zigzag appearance. Among these assets is the rose hedge beside Trinity Anglican Church. Called ‘Blanc double de Coubert,’ this hedge is composed of rugosa-type roses. Rugosa roses grow naturally in the far north-east of Asia and were brought to England and then Europe in the 19th century, where rose breeders developed today’s varieties. While research has not yet identified a specific site where they were first planted in this area, these roses have been enjoyed in Canada since they were developed in France in the village of Coubert in 1892. Rugosa roses have been found as fossils from up to 30 million years ago, and are among the oldest types of roses! Bright white flowers cover the plants in the spring and summer, and people can detect a beautiful fragrance when bending near. These flowers are very attractive to pollinators, and in the fall, bright red rosehips (the fruits) cover the plants and are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife. This rose hedge is a donation of the Julia Hunter Foundation at the London Community Foundation. The Julia Hunter Foundation has been contributing to the enjoyment of gardens across Ontario since 2005. As well as this gift, the foundation funds the planting of newly developed roses for the Canadian climate at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington.
