The London and Middlesex Heritage Museum, also known as Fanshawe Pioneer Village, is located on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, Chonnonton, and Wendat peoples.

Today, three vibrant and distinct First Nations continue to call this region home. These Nations have longstanding relationships with the land and place we now recognize as Middlesex County. These are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, and Munsee Delaware Nation.  Many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples call this area and the city home, helping to strengthen and shape the community.

Our museum’s regional mandate covers the territories of the Dish with One Spoon Covenant Wampum, the McKee Treaty (Treaty 2, 1790), the Between the Lakes Treaty (1792), London Township Treaty (Treaty 6, 1796), Sombra Township Treaty (Treaty 7, 1796), Longwoods Treaty (Treaty 21, 1822) and Treaty 29 (Huron Tract, 1827).

The museum acknowledges historical and ongoing injustices that Indigenous Peoples endure in Canada, and accepts responsibility as a public institution to contribute toward revealing and correcting miseducation, as well as building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities and working towards creating a just, inclusive and vibrant community for all.
